I'm posting this comment here also (did in bug #1052360 too): FWIW, I got this issue this morning when I logged into my desktop.
In my case the problem was that installing a new kernel failed because there wasn't enough space in /boot (I have a really tiny /boot and this happens whenever I forget to purge old kernels).
