I was running into a similar issue, but was able to resolve it with a less drastic approach. I ran strace on transmission-daemon and it showed a stat of a torrent .part file just before the SIGSEGV. I move the associated .resume file out of tranmission/resume and transmission- daemon started right up. I then requested a verify of that same torrent, just to make sure everything was good.
The interesting part is that the final couple of stats in the strace returned ENOENT (No such file or directory). Hope this helps the next person. BTW, this was on a Ubuntu Server 10.04 box with transmission 1.93.
