Chris: adding acpi_sleep=s3_bios to the kernel command line fixed backlight-disabled-on-resume for me (intel GM965). I've heard that a newer intel driver in git correctly initializes a couple of additional registers, which will make the acpi_sleep option unnecessary for my chipset.
