Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-7-generic

After updating my Edgy install from linux-image-2.6.17-6-386 to linux-
image-2.6.17-7-generic (2.6.17-7.20) and linux-image-generic (2.6.17.5),
I now experience boot failures as follows:

When attempting to boot from the new kernel as setup by grub
(/vmlinuz-2.6.17-7-generic root=/dev/sdb3 ro quiet splash), the system
just hangs on the bootsplash screen. If I boot without the 'splash'
argument, I get:

"Booting the operating system now.
[17179583.308000] usb 1-1: device not accepting address 2, error -71"

If I try booting to single-user mode (/vmlinuz-2.6.17-7-generic
root=/dev/sdb3 ro single), I get normal text boot messages until:

"[17179587.120000] drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: v2.6: USB HID core
driver"

where it hangs. Note that I continue to boot okay with the 2.6.17-6-386
kernel.

** Affects: linux-source-2.6.17 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Untriaged
         Status: Unconfirmed
