I would like to add a "me too". I'm using a Mac UK keyboard. I apt-get install console-data console-common, then install-keymap the correct keyboard layout. My tilde and grave then work as expected, whereas I got a > and < before. However, like OP says, the keymap doesn't survive a reboot.
