As far as I remember, when you hit "switch user" at the unlock screen, a new gdm screen is opened. Even if you would be forwarded to your already opened session when you try to log in again, I can't see, why this additional and unnecessary jump to GDM should be done. It just confuses the user! It is non-intuitive to be presented with a login screen, when you know, you left your desktop locked and did not log out.
