First of all, thanks for the hints, nickm. Loading sony_laptop and modifying /etc/acpi/sonybright.sh do make the brightness keys work again.
However, sony_laptop is not loaded at boot even though I added it to /etc/modules. It seems to work only when modprobed manually.
