By mere coincidence I decided to update the system presenting this
problem when the Tribe 5 of Kubuntu was released, so I'm able to confirm
that the problem is still present in Gutsy, and has the same solution
("options snd_intel8x0 ac97_quirk=hp_only" in /etc/modprobe.d/options).
