Addition maybe relevant:

After I got the upgraded partition to start, I noticed that Windows7 no
longer was in the Grub menu. So I launched the app "Grub customizer".
Saving Grub however did not correct this. I then noticed that according
to "Grub customizer" Grub was not in the MBR, so it saved it to the
partition. After choosing "install in MBR" the problem was solved.

So it seems that even though Grub was installed in MBR, Ubuntu itself
was not aware of that.
