I have the same problem in Ubuntu 14.04. In version 13.10, everything works fine. The problem is with the FFmpeg input plugin of cmus, I think it is fixed in the cmus repository (https://github.com/cmus/cmus), but Ubuntu ships the 2.5.0 version of cmus which is very outdated.
