Hi, I got a similar problem today after running > apt-get dist-upgrade to upgrade to 14.04.
After running it my desktop cannot show up when reboot. However, I found I can still use Cirl+Alt+F1 to go to tty1 and login using my user account with root privilege. Then I solved the problem and get my desktop back by running > apt-get install ubuntu-desktop lightdm It seems to me the package lightdm has been removed during the dist- upgrade.
