I can confirm the problem and in my opinion this is definitely a problem, even if Janne is right and the key finally gets generated after a long time. My system is not under load at all during the key generation.
I started gaim with strace. The output of the last few lines is attached. The last select statement with the "(Timeout)" gets repeated over and over. Unfortunately I am not elite enough to make sense out of this.
