Hmm, looks like I should have written all information at once. Oh well. I see exactly the behavior that the original poster does. I go to systemsettings to change the resolution but when I click "apply", nothing happens. I've done a strace -f systemsettings > /tmp/sys-trace 2>&1 which is attached.
