what sound device did you set in the preferences? It might be that mixxx picked a sound device where you don't have any speakers connected. I'm not sure if ubuntu also uses pulse-audio these days but I assume it does. Then you can check with pavu-control if pulse notices that mixxx wants to play some sounds
