It is not listed because those kind of network does not broadcast their
presence (they are  "hidden"). It is not easy to figure out they are in
the neighborhood and doing so is slow and requires more power to the
wifi card, which can harm battery time for notebook users.

kind of yes (the algorithm is not reliable). However, as I wrote above enabling 
the special scan type used to search for them requires more time and power to 
scan, therefor it is enabled only on demand.

I do not know. I, for one, did not add the "Hidden" option to the create
wifi dialo. I have just pushed a commit to make it clearer what that
option does. I hope that helps.
