I've attached a picture of the log as described in the link you gave me. Regarding installing the newer kernel on my installed system: It should be easily reversible if it doesn't work, right? As I use this computer daily, I don't want to break my current install. Ubuntu 12.04 was pre- installed by DELL if that matters
