I've updated the BIOS:

mike@charron:~
$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
[sudo] password for mike:
Version 2.20
12/22/2011

I had to install and use Windows to do that, so I briefly tested
bluetooth in Windows, and it worked fine.

I'm not sure what else you want to know about "what happened" -- I
updated the BIOS, and the problem I'm describing is unchanged.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
       Status: Incomplete => Confirmed
