recompiled alsa drivers as per Holmen's instructions above.

went into alsamixer to check that no channels were muted - none were.

still didnt work.

fresh feisty install.

the maddening thing about this is that when i play an mp3 in Beep or
Totem, the oscilloscopes show that *something* is playing - but i can
hear anything.

(i have a Gateway laptop)
