Hi! I just experienced the same problem here (gutsy i386, Thinkpad T41p with ATI FireGL T2, "radeon" driver). I try to change my resolution with xrandr, but nothing happens, no flicker, no error message. Attached, there is an strace of xrandr. There are no relevant messages in Xorg.0.log oder syslog after attempting to change resolution.
