This may be related to <http://musescore.org/node/17463> which states changing reverb settings may help which seems to be a problem with the reverb algorithm. V1.3 was released almost a year ago. I installed from the ppa:mscore-ubuntu/mscore-stable and that improved playback significantly. I had been seeing 100% CPU and lag and glitches. V1.3 plays same piece at 40% CPU and no glitches. So the work-around may be to disable reverb. The fix may be for Canonical to update the package to V1.3.
