I was able to reproduce the problem by going to the .viminfo file and 
deliberately removing '>'  from one of the cmds listed after 
the line "# History of marks within files (newest to oldest):" in .viminfo

Adding it back... the issue is not seen.

So it definitely looks like somehow the '>' went missing in the .viminfo
in your case.

I also went ahead, removed vim, manually rm -f .viminfo, re-installed
vim and used vim and noticed that the .viminfo created afresh works fine
w/o exhibiting the issue reported here.

I am on Power8 Host running ubuntu alpha cloudimage in guest.
