I doubt that this is the issue. I have tested so many scenarios that I lost track, but currently only one user is logged in and there is no sound. I have started Audacity and selected ALSA and HDA Intel PCH: ALC892 Analog but get no sound. There is no pulseaudio involved. The test tones in the settings dialogs produce no output. The hissing goes away if I mute the channel. But no sound.
