After having problems with the xemacs21 install through Synaptic and apt-get, I downloaded a package from xemacs.com. The installation was not successful, with the installation script crashing with a message that the compiler is broken, returning a value of 0 for the size of a short (integer). I checked gcc, and it returned 2 as sizeof(short), which is correct. Further checking showed that the package requires an older version of autoconf (2.13) than what Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installs by default (autoconf 2.68). Although Synaptic installed xemacs21 with errors configuring ...-mule and ...-nomule, it is an older package with outdated internet support and it generates error messages at times when executing some elisp code. The other version of emacs available in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, emacs version 23, seems to be more up-to-date and work with fewer problems.
