The situation should definitely be improved. I had some problems already with ubuntu's init (bug #1077650) and this is another case 1) that would make it impossible for a less knowledgeable person to boot and 2) that is rather hard to diagnose even if you have some profound knowledge. I second Thorsten's comments regarding the fstab manpage very much. It was also the first place where I have looked for an answer.
