To fix the middleclick problem in your profile, you should go to about:config in Firefox and change the setting: middlemouse.contentLoadURL to true.
Quite a painful bug indeed. Because this behaviour is something that can generally expected from a browser (and also works fine in every other browser I tried in Ubuntu). It gives Firefox a bad mark in Ubuntu.
