Sitsofe: I cannot recreate the problem any more. I just re-booted to 2.6.20-16-generic and it came up using nvidia-glx without a problem. Yesterday it was giving me API mismatch errors. I couldn't fix it in 2.6.20-16 so I reverted to 2.6.20-15 and did depmod and modprobe stuff, and probably apt-get remove and install stuff, and eventually it worked. Today I re-booted to 2.6.20-16 just to re-create the error, following your post, and lo it works.
Here is what is installed: ~ $apt-show-versions -p linux-restricted-modules-generic linux-restricted-modules-generic/feisty uptodate 2.6.20.16.28.1 ~ $apt-show-versions -p nvidia-kernel-common nvidia-kernel-common/feisty uptodate 20051028+1ubuntu7 ~ $apt-show-versions -p nvidia-glx nvidia-glx/feisty uptodate 1:1.0.9631+2.6.20.5-16.29 As for the Howto, I don't have a complaint about it other than I tried to follow it and didn't get nvidia working. I think this has to be closed. I think you were right when you said it was a support error. I suspect I had a mismatch between linux- restricted-modules-generic and a 386 kernel, or vice versa, or something.
