Public bug reported: I got a new router (ASUS RT-AC66U) and wifi on my laptop started getting really slow, most noticeable in the way it dropped packets and had very long roundtrip times for 'ping 8.8.8.8'
Searching online, I discovered that this might be due to a power saving feature, which says that some routers have a bug that makes power save polling not work. See http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-006205.htm for details. Sure enough, when I plugged my AC in, packet loss went away and everything was great. When I removed it, packet loss appeared again. When I ran "iwconfig wlan0 power off" while AC unplugged, that restored correct behaviour. Following the advice at http://blog.linuxjunkie.com/blog/2012/04/11 /linux-and-the-intel-centrino-wireless-n-1030/ I edited /usr/lib/pm- utils/power.d/wireless and changed line 39 (standard Ubuntu 13.10 config) from "power on” to “power off”. This fix "works" but obviously means the wifi will drain more power than it needs to. For me with this laptop, this is an acceptable trade-off. In an ideal world it would only be off for broken routers.
