The tests are intentionally overkill - they are also intended to try and test handling of large batches, as well as generally stress the system.
I hadn't noticed the basic-copyarea fail. That does look to be different. So far, the failure pattern had seemed to be a subspan doesn't get written (i.e. a single instance of one thread failed to execute correctly in the GPU, which I think could explain the general bug here.) basic-copyarea looks like a larger scale failure.
