I experience the same, in a 13.04 Lenovo Thinkpad X201s with i915
graphics. Updated but not upgraded to 13.10. Latest BIOS flashed
yesterday. Problem existed before and after flashing.

The following phrase (copied from another comment) describes my experience
exactly:
"After a few minutes it freezes up in such a way that mouse movement can be
seen but nothing can be clicked or typed. Forced rebooting with the power
switch is the only option."

Most logs in /var/log show nothing interesting. The event happened a bit
before time 39909 so here's Xorg.0.log's relevant part (attached).

It only happens when I try to wake the screens up after they have turned
off. If I disable screen auto off function I am fine. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace
works so I just relogin. Very annoying when I have virtual machines
running though... they get shut off improperly.
