Works normally on 12.04 clean installation, but fails on later versions, as described by K.T.: no launcher no top panel very slow most keyboard shortcuts not working e.g. Crtrl-Alt-L Desktop right click menu works. GUI apps can be launched, and "work" but those that are Unity menu integrated have no access to their menus
