I can't say whether FFmpeg or libav was in use, all I can say is that I removed the issue by uninstalling lightwave and doing an update that then upgraded libav.
Sorry, not lightwave, it's Lightworks! http://www.lwks.com/ is an excellent crossplatform professional-grade video editor that has just released a Linux edition, they had released pre-release versions for free, I don't know if there is still a free version as my hardware was just too slow to run the kit.
