Events in xev work when the mouse is working properly. However, when it
isn't, the button clicks are not always seen in xev. Clicking a second
time or with the other button sometimes causes more events than just
that one click to display. It isn't just the backlog of clicks that
haven't been displayed. For example, pressing 1 which is not displayed,
then 3, may suddenly show 1, 1, 3. The state field varies.

However, yesterday when I was doing what you asked, the mouse started
working correctly. Once it is working correctly, it has never gone back
to bad without rebooting. Today, it stayed bad until I pressed the two
buttons while in xev at the same time to simulate a button 2 press.
Then it started working correctly. I am hopeful that this is a
workaround, but won't know until I can repeatedly do it. I'll update
this as I gain more experience with it.
