I'm not an official maintainer - I'm just another user. I tried to answer your queries to the best of my knowledge. I believe Martin Pitt is the r-m maintainer.
Paladine: I no longer have machines that see the problem (they all use Ubuntu provided drivers) so consequently (like you) I don't have the time to test this (since you were the reporter I thought you would be able to do this but your follow up explains more). Ideally someone who does see this problem needs to step in and report the issue and give reproducible steps. This might generate reproducible steps that others can follow or they can provide debugging information that helps someone who can't see the problem resolve the issue (this is what I've had to do in the past but it can take time). This, of course, is speculation on my part - jdong is the one with the @ubuntu.com address not me. I do agree that r-m shouldn't stomp on manual binary driver installs and I think I said that the issue needs investigation in my original comment up at the top. As for your last point, I think that might be better sent to one of the mailing lists. I have spent time trying to debug manual installs and deemed it too costly because there are too many things I feel that can go wrong (for an example please see Bug #106434 ). However if Ubuntu/Canonical is putting in the work to resolve and follow up on cases like manual installs it will be their time and energy being used and nothing to do with me. Until such a time Ubuntu/Canonical salary me I may choose to skip bug reports or stop looking at bugs altogether (I already have to work to earn money). I *do* see your point though (to hear more post to a mailing list I read). John: I think I said that r-m installs which just go over the top of manual installs should be investigated and gave steps on how to proceed. Note that I did not close this bug report. I'm trying to triage the odd bug and do some cross referencing (I shall stop if you feel this is counter productive). However the more issues a bug contains the harder it is to understand what a bug refers to - are you saying this bug is about r-m not touching previously installed binary drivers or is it about the -new drivers not being installed on cards that can handle them? Is this about people switching drivers and the hidden file issue? -- Restricted Drivers Manager and NVidia https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131852 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
