I confirm that this still occurs with gnome-terminal and mate-terminal in Ubuntu 13.10. Same behaviour. Virtual terminals randomly freeze output.
Note: this does not necessarily need to be long running. The behaviour is random and can arise in a few minutes (10 minutes today) or a few hours (6 hours) a few days ago. The common characteristic seems to be text output to the virtual terminal. The terminal freezes output (that is the window stays live as do all the menus) but the output just stops.
