Try adding 'Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy' to 'Section "Device" of
your xorg.conf, it may improve performance with EXA - however, some
operations may still be slower than XAA. There are further optimizations
in the works for EXA, but the real strength of the architecture will lie
in its compositing abilities and speed in the near future.
