I've got the same problem with Edubuntu 7.04 on my Thinkpad 770Z.
The installation CD runs fine, but when I boot from the hard drive with the 
MA401 installed, I get the Bad EIP panic.  Luckily, the "console=" hack above 
does prevent the panic for me, too.  THANK YOU FOR THAT TIP!
