I've been living with this problem (on 2 900X3C's) and have just noticed
something that might point to a solution.

I have all the problems/symptoms described above (no charge/drain
recognition, no kb backlight, no lid-close notification, has magically
appeared at times of OS install.)

But, htop (after going into the settings and displaying the battery
state) correctly picks up the a/c cable insertion/removal,
charging/discharging indication, and fully charged state.

So, htop is getting this information from somewhere that's spot on, but
(in my case xfce4-power-manager, and I'm guessing upowerd) are looking
elsewhere and not getting the correct information.

Not sure if it's going to help, but maybe it might point to a workaround
at least.
