Hi, I was just searching this topic and found this thread, as I have an Inspiron 1501 and was just having this problem trying to install Linux Mint 15.
I'm downloading Ubuntu 13.04 now and will try a live USB of that and let you know the results. I'm starting with the standard release, but will also test the development release you linked to above.
