I just tried using a live ubuntu 13.04. I couldn't reproduce with the crash on resume either using "acpi_backlight=vendor" or without. However, you still can't control the lightness without it.
Please note that it was a "live" 13.04 using 3.8.0.19 kernel and default configuration.
