Ok, I tested the aforementioned patch. It doesn't solve it for me. Using the new driver gave me a much lower mouse sensitivity than before. When switching user the first time, the pointer actually worked. When returning though, the screensaver password prompt hadn't appeared. This confirms previous workarounds. It may be useful to note that mouse became extremely sensitive after switching back (only that time though). Subsequent user-switches though had the old behaviour: pointer was insensitive to touchpad. Please find attached synaptics-related Xorg.log messages.
