@Koos I have almost the exact same setup, except not sure about the UEFI boot mode. I have the developer edition and installed xubuntu from a flash drive. Is your backlight completely off or just the controls not work? The controls were the problem for me: before 3.8.0-30-44 the backlight was always full brightness.
