I started experiencing this problem on 12.04, it persisted after upgrading to
12.10 and even persisted after a clean install (on an empty partition) of
13.04. It also happens when I just boot from a USB stick with 13.04.
This is always with the same partitions.... and I'm guessing that might be part
of the problem. These partitions were created years ago, and have different
versions. The raid5 partition has 0.90 metadata, but the raid0 partition used
as part of the raid5, has version 1.0 metadata. Could this cause the problem?
Still... isn't there anyone who can explain why the regular startup of Ubuntu
fails to start these raids, and doing mdadm --stop on all devices and then
running mdadm -A -s does succeed, even on a USB bootstick without any
/edc/mdadm.conf?
