Hmmm.... Today I tried booting up again and it went back to the "black screen of death" with nothing more than a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I shut down, and booted it up again and it got the login screen. The behaviour seems random.
So, to conclude, it seems that the problem is not yet solved, despite the BIOS update. Shame. P.S. (FYI - I have now got a new problem though -- my battery reports it to be at 84%, but in windows this is 100%. So there appears to be some miscommunication between my hardware and xubuntu/kernel. Fan also seems a little more active than it was..........sigh - something for a seperate new bug report....so much for a BIOS "update").
