I´m using the german version of dapper and had a similar problem.

First I don´t have passphrase as an option in teh dropdown menu.

But anyway, I was trying to set up my Netgear WG111v2 USB Wlan Stick
and it was autodetected as eth0.
I solved that problem. After I got it installed via ndiswrapper and it was
detected as wlan0, I was trying to configure it and there it was:

I chose hex and entered the key in hex while watching the enties in

/etc/network/interfaces

One digit of my key (it was a 0 digit) changed to "o" and there was no
connection to the wlan router.

After changing the entry to "0" in interfaces directly and activating wlan0
in the Networmanager the system hang.

During my research for suggestions to intall that Netgear Wlan stick I
found a comment of someone who was talking about system hang during
intallation of WG111v2.

So I think that there ist a bug in the networkmanager when changing
the entry in interfaces.

By the way there were a lot of entries in interfaces for the same devices
with different parameters.

I would suggest that networkmanager could check this and bring it to
the user to choose from.

I hope this helped to confirm that there must be a bug.
