I contacted Dell as suggested, asked them what the recommended method
for updating the BIOS when running Ubuntu and got a response today:

"The easiest way to update the firmware on your server is to use the “platform 
update” from the lifecycle controller. You can see a short video here on how to 
do that here:

Updates)

Dell also offer a tools called the “Dell repository manager” that can be used 
to download firmware updates for later deployment such as using a DVD/CD to 
update the server. More information on this tool can be found on our community

I will proceed with the BIOS update (probably using the "easiest way")
as soon as possible and let you know how it goes.
