I had the same problem the other day. After few hours and few re-install I added xorg.conf file to /etc/X11 (I think it was there) and changed two lines too: Driver "nvidia" VendorName "NVIDIA"
and rebooted. Now the additional drivers works and I could pick drivers I wanted.
