I notice that your machine is using orinico_cs instead of hostap_cs. Perhaps this is why your machine is not kernel panicking any more? ( Although I did not choose the drivers in ubuntu, I find that hostap_cs is better because it supports WPA whereas I never got WPA to worth with orinico_cs when I was working with gentoo.
My wireless card works fine if I insert it once booted.
