After some further reflection I wondered about the version of winbind in each case, this is the result:
Ubuntu 13.04 (not working): winbind/raring uptodate 2:3.6.9-1ubuntu1 Debian Wheezy 7.1 (working): winbind/wheezy uptodate 2:3.6.6-6 So maybe the Ubuntu version has been (in this respect at least) negatively enhanced. I have reinstalled my new server with Debian Wheezy.
