I'm in a somewhat different case. I recently upgraded to 12.04, updated to lately, almost now, and the sound no longer comes in (not from the headset but from the microphone). In fact, strangely, the mike works just after a reboot but not after it has been unplugged (and, need I say, replugged). The output is OK. The device is a 04b4:0307, an ubiquitous chip found in soundcards and, in my case, an USB phone.
I have tested various operating systems on VirtualBox, but Unity is so screen consuming that Ubuntu no longer works on VirtualBox and that I could only carry the tests with LinuxMint. The results are surprising. It seems that as soon as Ubuntu got busy with Unity stuff it has no longer time to support audio.
