Another fix seems to be to install the Intel-linux-graphics-installer from https://01.org/linuxgraphics/
Seemingly this changes the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to read: Section "Device" Identifier "Card0" Driver "intel" Option "AccelMethod" "sna" EndSection It would seem that sna is enabled by default on Raring however it was disabled because I had to use nomodeset to be able to boot to ubuntu without getting just a black screen.
